Research summaries
This category features summaries of other people’s research that I’ve read. I sometimes include brief commentary and criticism. Even if I include some critical comments, most of the research here is excellent work—I try not to waste my time reading bad research.
Granados et al 2010: Information Transparency in Business-to-Consumer Markets: Concepts, Framework, and Research Agenda
Granados, Nelson, Alok Gupta and Robert J. Kauffman (2010). Research Commentary—Information Transparency in Business-to-Consumer Markets: Concepts, Framework, and Research Agenda. Information Systems Research (21:2), June 2010, pp. 207-226. I read this as a literature review in ISR. Rationale: In the past decade (2000 to 2010), there has been an increasing trend for companies to make more internal information about themselves and their products and services available for customers to see. The industry-changing nature of the Internet has...

Nevo, Saggi & Wade, Michael R., 2010. The Formation and Value of IT-Enabled Resources: Antecedents and Consequences of Synergistic Relationships. MIS Quarterly, 34(1), pp.163-183. I read this as an exemplar literature review paper; however, it is not a review paper; it is a theory development paper. It was well-worth my time, though. Rationale: It has been challenging to empirically demonstrate the firm-level impact of IT assets, which has led some to conclude that IT assets in themselves have no strategic value. The authors believe that...

Chen, Daniel; Mocker, Martin; Preston, David S.; and Teubner, Alexander. 2010. "Information Systems Strategy: Reconceptualization, Measurement, and Implications," MIS Quarterly, (34: 2) pp.233-259. This is a systematic literature review that generates a new conceptualization of information systems strategy. Rationale: The term "information systems strategy" (IS strategy or ISS), not to be confused with "IT strategy", is often used, but not clearly defined or conceptualized in the research literature. It is...

Webster, Jane and Watson, Richard T. 2002. Analyzing the Past to Prepare for the Future: Writing a Literature Review. MIS Quarterly, (26: 2) pp. xiii – xxiii. Webster and Watson 20012 is the classic information systems research article on writing literature reviews. It is an editorial. Rationale: Up till 2002, there had been a shortage of review articles in IS research. Although MIS Quarterly had previously launched the MISQ Review section to address this, it still appeared that IS researchers in general where not very clear on how to write a...

Jiming Wu and Albert L. Lederer 2010. A Meta-Analysis of the Role of Environment-Based Voluntariness in Information Technology Acceptance. MIS Quarterly (33:2), June 2009, pp. 419-432. I read this article as an exemplar of a systematic literature review (specifically, a meta-analysis) in IS research. Rationale: The technology acceptance model (TAM) has been much researched and refined, based on its basic propositions that ease of use -> perceived usefulness, ease of use -> behavioural intention, perceived usefulness ->...

A. Arora, R Krishnan, R Telang, Y Yang (2008) "An Empirical Analysis of Software Vendors’ Patch Release Behavior: Impact of Vulnerability Disclosure", Information Systems Research (ISR), 21(1), 115-132 I read this article because of its consideration of open source software (OSS), even though is considered in only one hypothesis; the paper was nonetheless quite interesting and valuable. Rationale: Because of the high volume of security vulnerabilities in software, it is very important for software vendors to create and release...

TS Raghu, Rajiv Sinha, Ajay Vinze, and Orneita Burton (2009). Willingness to Pay in an Open Source Software Environment. Information Systems Research (20:2), June 2009, pp. 218-236. I read this paper because of my interest in theoretical perspectives on open source software. Rationale: Various issues related to and in response to software piracy affects consumers' willingness to pay (WTP) for software. In particular, the nature and extent of anti-piracy controls and the presence of viable OSS alternatives are pertinent. This paper is...

Stewart, K., Ammeter, T., and Maruping, L."Impacts of License Choice and Organizational Sponsorship on User Interest and Development Activity in Open Source Software Projects," Information Systems Research (17:2), 2006, pp. 126-144. I read this paper for a theory-based perspective on the open source software (OSS) phenomenon. Rationale: The main motivation of this paper is an attempt to understand why "some OSS projects succeed and others fail." Among many studies of the motivations of OSS developers, two important factors...

Stewart, K. and Gosain, S. The impact of ideology on effectiveness in open source software development teams. MIS Quarterly 30, 2 (2006), 291-314. I read this paper for a theory-based perspective on the open source software (OSS) phenomenon. Rationale: There has been considerable research on the motivations and outputs of OSS processes. One underlying characteristics of the OSS phenomenon is that it is largely driven by particular ideological perspectives. This research investigates if adherence to classical OSS ideology has positive effects...
