Gleanings from Deuteronomy

  • Deu 30:20 In loving Jehovah your God by listening to His voice and holding fast to Him; for He is your life and the length of your days, that you may dwell upon the land which Jehovah swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them.

    This is a clear, explicit Old Testament text that says, “Jehovah is your life.”

  • Deu 32:48 And Jehovah spoke to Moses that same day, saying,
    49
    Go up to this mountain of the Abarim, Mount Nebo, which is in the land of Moab, which faces Jericho, and see the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the children of Israel as a possession;
    50
    And die in the mountain to which you are going up, and be gathered to your people, just as Aaron your brother died in Mount Hor and was gathered to his people;
    51
    Because you were unfaithful to Me among the children of Israel at the waters of Meribah-kadesh, in the wilderness of Zin; because you did not sanctify Me among the children of Israel.
    52
    But from a distance you shall see the land, yet you shall not go there into the land which I am giving to the children of Israel.

    Deut 32 is God’s warning to Israel in anticipation of their rebelling against His law. These final verses are Moses’ personal experience of the warning: because He was unfaithful to God, God took away his portion of the good land, and did not permit him to enter it. The sons of Israel had every reason to believe that God meant business when He was warning them about how severely He could reverse blessing and turn it into a curse.
