Gleanings from Exodus

  • This year, I’ve mainly been reading the Old Testament in Jay Green’s Literal Translation. Ex 16:4 caught my eye:

    And Jehovah said to Moses, Behold, I  AM! Bread will rain from the heavens for you.

    Compare the Recovery Version:

    Then Jehovah said to Moses, I will now rain bread from heaven for you;

    So, I took a look at the Hebrew:

    וַיֹּאמֶר יְהוָה אֶל-מֹשֶׁה, הִנְנִי מַמְטִיר לָכֶם לֶחֶם מִן-הַשָּׁמָיִם;

    I don’t think I’ve seen הִנְנִי (hineni) before translated as “Behold, I AM.” I would translated it just as “Behold!” or “Behold me!”

    However, this got me wondering about whether a study of the occurences of  הִנְנִי (Behold me!) in the Old Testament might correspond to the occurences of ἐγώ εἰμι (ego eimi) in John. This would be an interesting word study in the future.
